All the best action from Australia's biggest wake event of the year.
Australia’s premier wakeboard event was held on Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10/1/2010 in Adelaide’s blistering heat wave of 43 degs. Monster Energy Wake Wars is the longest running wakeboarding event in Australia, 8 years young. This year Chris Higgs from Ride on Events pushed this event to a new level with some of the riders calling it the biggest stand alone wakeboard event in the world. With Mastercraft towing the event it had the same boat as the PWT in the States, with the wake made by the worlds best wakeboard boat the XSTAR.
With Adelaides heat wave Monster Energy Wake Wars was stamped no doubt the biggest stand alone wake boarding event attracting crowds of thousands of people, including both wakeboarding followers and people new to the sport, enticed by the thrill of the sport and the enjoyment of the laidback, festival feel of this event on the waters’ edge.
This event ensures that spectators saw some of the world’s best riders at Australia’s best back drop for wakeboarding, in the heart of Glenelg at Lake Patawalonga. The venue is only 2.5km from one of the best tourist areas and city beaches in South Australia. The event shows spectators how fun the sport of wakeboarding is, and the opportunities that exist in the sport both here and overseas.
Yes, your right. You could describe Monster Energy Wake Wars 2010 as the tournament of extreme. The extreme air temperatures of 43 degrees celsius harmonizing with the salinity levels of the patawaloga lake in Glenelg, S.A. The extreme atmosphere of the thousands of spectators lining up for one more drink of Monster Energy. The huge Mastercraft XStar pulling the riders out of the starting pool to shock the crowed of its domination over even the most experience riders.
But you know, from an insider’s perspective, Monster Energy Wake Wars 2010 was a tournament of an introduction. A stepping-stone for the Groms of last year to finally look at their amateur tracks and pass the line into the pro division. Riders such as Brad Teunissen, Mitch Askew, Dylan Ordisio, and Ethan Connor. And Daniel Watkins, Harley Clifford, Dean Smith and Austin Hair (only to mention a very small portion) welcomed the rising talent with open arms but also a feeling of pressure.
Monster Energy Wake Wars, Aus premier wakeboard competition of the season delivered what was expected, a competition of just that. The results of the Mens finals:
1st/ King of Wake- Harley Clifford
2nd Dean Smith
3rd Austin Hair
4th Sam Thompson
5th Ryleigh Pfitzner
6th Jarrod Askew
7th Mitch Askew
8th Daniel Watkins
Ryleigh gaining the Mark Kenney rising star award for 2010
The first year of the women division brought excitement and will definitely bring more competitors in next year. Hayley Smith and Amber Wing showed an outstanding performance, battling it out for some cash and the title ‘Queen of Wake’. The women’s division has showed some riding unlike any other year. It’s as if a bomb has exploded and some of the girls moves on the rails and on the wake are pushing the spectators expectations of the men’s riding. At the end of the day, Hayley was crowned Queen of Wake. Amber finished second, Bec Gange third and Caitlin Blaauw fourth.
Thanks to all the riders that were involved and the supporters of the event, It was a huge success and hope to see you all again next year for Monster Energy Wake Wars 2011!
A special shout out to Dave from Monster Energy, the volunteer team at Ride On Events, Grant and Ronni from Mastercraft, Nick at wrapmyride.com, the City of Holdfast Bay and Fonz from Coopers.
